Mermaiding in Portovenere A Different Way to Experience the Sea
Not all sea experiences happen on a boat. Some begin in the water.
Discover what to see in Portovenere: St. Peter’s Church, Doria Castle, Byron’s Grotto, beaches and Palmaria island. The complete guide to this UNESCO village.
Built quite literally on the rock, at the very tip of the promontory, the Church of St. Peter (Chiesa di San Pietro) is probably the most photographed sight in Portovenere.
The current structure, in black-and-white striped Genoese Gothic style, was built in the 13th century over the remains of a 5th-century early Christian building.
From the terrace behind the church, perched right above the cliffs, the view stretches from the Cinque Terre to Palmaria island — the village’s best panoramic spot, especially at sunset.
Climbing up through the alleys of the village centre leads to Doria Castle, a pentagon-shaped fortress built by the Republic of Genoa between the 12th and 15th centuries to control access to the gulf.
Inside, visitors can explore the striking Hypostyle Hall, with its eight central columns, and the Captain’s House.
During the Napoleonic era, the castle was also used as a prison for political detainees.
Today it hosts temporary exhibitions and offers one of the best views over the entire village.
Between Punta San Pietro and Doria Castle lies Byron’s Grotto, originally known as Cala dell’Arpaia and later renamed after the English poet Lord Byron, who according to local legend reached it by swimming across the entire gulf from Lerici.
A little further away, on the cliffs of Palmaria island, is the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), reachable only by sea and famous for the way light plays on the water inside.
(We cover both grottoes in more detail in our dedicated article on Portovenere’s sea caves.)
Via Capellini, known locally as “il Carugio”, is the main street running through Portovenere from the entrance gate to the church.
On either side stand the famous tower-houses of the Palazzata a Mare, built tightly against one another with very few openings facing outward — a medieval defensive system designed to protect the village from seaborne attacks, and today the postcard image of Portovenere.
Just across from the village, a few minutes by ferry from the Molo Doria pier, lies Palmaria island, also part of the UNESCO site.
It offers scenic hiking trails, coves reachable only by boat such as Cala della Fornace and Cala dell’Ammiraglio, and the Secco beach, the island’s most accessible and popular spot.
Anyone looking for a swim in crystal-clear water has plenty of options:
the pebbly bay at the entrance to the village, with beach clubs such as Arenella and the Royal Sporting Club, or wilder coves reachable on foot or by boat. For the full rundown, including how to reach each beach, see our dedicated guide to the beaches of Portovenere and Palmaria.
Autumn and winter reward visitors with a quiet village, perfect light for photography and free hiking trails, while the summer high season brings events, nightlife and ideal swimming weather.
Whatever time of year you choose, Portovenere deserves at least a full day to be truly appreciated — with plenty of walking, scenic stops, and a meal at one of the harbourside restaurants to try the local speciality, mussels alla portovenerese.
